Licensing Model: Desktop Operating Systems (Per Copy Per Device)

Simple Terms
By James Pearson-Harris

Each license that you acquire must be permanently assigned to a device. You may run the software in either a physical or virtual OSE on the licensed device.

Local use (on the licensed device) is permitted for any user. Remote use of the software is permitted for the Primary User of the licensed device. The Primary User is someone "who uses the device more than 50% of the time in any 90 day period." Remote use for any other user must be from as separately licensed device, or from a device with a Windows VDA license. Only one user may access and use the software at a time.

Another user can access the software at the same time, using Remote Assistance or similar technologies, solely to provide technical support. You may connect up to 20 devices to the Licensed Device for file sharing, printing, Internet Information Services, Internet Connection Sharing or telephony services.

WINDOWS TO GO

For organizations who have purchased Windows 8 Pro with SA, Windows To Go enables the creation of a Windows To Go desktop that can be booted from a USB stick on PCs, regardless of the operating system running on the PC. Windows To
Go desktops can use the same image enterprises use for their desktop PCs and laptops and can be managed the same way.
When end-users are provided with the bootable USB stick, they are able to use their Windows 8 desktop on corporate devices, as well as personal devices and other third party devices when outside the corporate firewall.

Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP)

The Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) is a suite of technologies available as a subscription for Software Assurance customers. MDOP virtualization technologies help personalize the user experience, simplify application deployment, and improve application compatibility with the Windows operating system (UE-V/App-V/MED-V). Additionally, MDOP helps manage, monitor, and deploy key Windows features (MBAM/AGPM). Using MDOP shifts desktop repair from reactive to proactive, saving time and removing challenges associated with troubleshooting and repairing system failures (DaRT).

Licensing Model: Desktop Applications

Simple Terms
By James Pearson-Harris

You must acquire one license for every device that uses the software, regardless of how that device accesses the software.

If the software has been acquired via Volume Licensing (VL), but NOT on a company-wide basis the Primary User of the software is permitted to install a 2nd copy on a portable device.

You can only install software on a Network Device (Server) if it has been acquired via Microsoft Volume Licensing. You do not need a separate license for the server so long as each device that accesses the software in this way is licensed with the same Volume Licensing version and edition of the software.
